Can I use VoIP on my mobie?

Using VoIP (internet telephony) is a great way to lower your phone costs - but can you use it on your mobile phone?

For the modern mobile handset - a smartphone such as an iPhone or Android handsets - the answer is yes.

It is possible to install an App to allow you to connect to a VoIP telephone service. You can then make calls using a WiFi rather than the more expensive mobile phone network. Obviously this means you need to be in range of a WiFi network you can connect to, such as your home or office WiFi.

VoIP should also work on BlackBerry but this depends on whether your handset and mobile operator is blocking this functionality.

How much cheaper are VoIP calls?

All charges will vary, depending on your VoIP provider, typically calls to other VoIP numbers on the same system are free. The calls to non-VoIP phones will incur a charge but these can be a mere fraction of what you would pay from a mobile.

What about connecting to my office phone system? Can I use the same number?

Modern "Internet Aware" phone system will have loads of features to help you get the best out of VoIP. These features will allow you to share your office number on your mobile and get free calls for people outside the office.

What about call quality?

Well you get what you pay for. Free "services" are usually on a best endeavour basis whereas buying a "Business Grade" service ensures that you will have good service availability. If your telephone conversations are important (eg calling prospects or customers) then you should pay the small amount for a business grade service.
