How long do laptop batteries last?

Laptop batteries typically last between 1 and 3 years. You can extend this, depending on the type of battery, with careful use.

Battery lifetime

Several factors determline battery lifetime:

  • Type of battery: lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries are the most common and typically last about 1 year according to the manufacturers.
  • Frequency of recharging and use: heavy usage and frequent recharging reduces the lifespan
  • Quality of product: Not all similar power batteries are equal and those with cheaper construction will see the amount of charge degrade faster.

Extending your Battery life

You can extend the lifetime of Lithium Ion batteries by removing them from your laptop when not required. It is best to leave them unplugged until you need them. This cuts down on the recharging.

Recent Samsung laptops have a life extension option. This keeps the charge at 80% while the unit is on charge, which is supposed to prolong life.

Finally you could swap your hard disk for a solid state drive (SSD). This uses computer memory to store the information rather than the traditional spinning disk. They use dramatically less power (1/10th or less) and are much faster (approximately 10x times).
